Starting a home based courier business?

To start a home based courier business there are a few things you need, a van and a phone immediately spring to mind. What about the other things? You will need space for your home based courier business.

If you have a van and a car how will your neighbours react? If you have a driveway, can you fit both vehicles? Use the space carefully, if your neighbours start complaining about the van or other vehicles you could find things difficult.

Space in the home is a priority – where will you put your paperwork? Where will you keep your data?  Whilst it’s possible to operate a business without a computer, it’s much easier to have one – will it be safe where you keep it?

Phones, yes you can run a business from a mobile phone but many customers like to call a landline – it projects security and that’s essential in your courier business. Look into options like BT call sign, so you can have a ‘business line’ as well as a family or personal line.

Starting a home based courier business gives you the flexibility to work the hours that you want. Be careful of the distractions of other people in the home environment. Working from home also means your start up courier business has less overheads and that’s a big advantage to a new business.

Starting a home based courier business really gives you the best of both worlds, as you will be out on the road meeting people and not working in isolation all the time.

Remember, your van is not your office!

Using your PDA in your courier business

A PDA or Personal Digital Assistant is a vital tool for the modern same day courier business. As more transport companies become greener and more sustainable, they are looking at ways of utilising their empty vehicles. In the past it has always been about gaining backloads and work for the return journey – nothing is more harmful to the environment (with the exception of an accident) than running back empty. Freelance couriers are now looking to co-load and part load items in order to maximise their efficiency.

Where the PDA comes into it…

Freight and parcel exchanges are springing up all over the place, and although they all like to think they are unique and are fulfilling a niche that is untapped, the honest truth is transport has had them for as long as there has been the ability to have a website.

Having a mobile PDA always you to tap into all of these services and post your return journeys. A well planned van delivery should always include a search for return items to eliminate dead mileage. Depending on the size of your van depends whether you will be transporting furniture or packages.

Using your PDA most effectively will also mean updating your Facebook status – so people can see where you are (do you know how many jobs we have collected using Facebook? 2 or 3 a week… not to be sniffed at, and if people know what you do, they will recommend you).

Your PDA can also be used as a tracking device, so your customers can track the vehicle online and know exactly where you are instead of them phoning and asking you all the time. There are two types of software that do this, one is free and the other has a small fee.

Proof of Delivery? Yes, your PDA comes into it’s own here – a small piece of software that enables you to collect a signature and email it back to your customer or your office. No need to lose paperwork, no need to worry about having a pen, your PDA has it all.

Lost? Use the GPS aspect, yes you may think your Sat Nav is foolproof but when you are sitting in a field looking for an address, you might like not having to phone the office or the customer for extra directions.

If your business is a modern same day courier business you will be maximising all opportunities for more work, more efficient working and you cannot do it without this essential piece of kit.

Please sir, can I have some more?

When times get tougher, you need to look at all aspects of your business especially the parts where you could earn more money.

One area that is often talked about is ‘repeat business’, where an existing customer comes back to book your courier services again, and again and again. In an ideal world all of our customers would be like this (if we wanted them to be).

So how do you get repeat business from your customers?

The obvious one is often the one thats most overlooked – asking for more business.

When was the last time you did that? How did you get on? Did you just stop after asking one customer?

Thought about becoming a courier with your redundancy?

Times are tough in the transport industry at present, and many people can see opportunities to become a self employed courier or start a courier business.

The first thing you have to do is your reseacgh, do you want to start an express courier business or a parcel courier business? Do you know the difference? can you explain that difference in order to win business?

Think twice before you invest your redundancy money into something you don’t know much about.

Speak to independant business advisors, could you buy a going concern and win new business? would that be easier than starting from scratch?

Whatever you decide good luck :-)

Please bear with me a few days whilst I get the copy and the pages for our associates up and running. I aim to get the books back online this evening – the Complete Courier Guide (for freelance / self employed couriers) and the Sales Success for Couriers book – the brilliant book by leading sales trainer Linda Mattacks.

Thanks

Kevin
