Resources for people who drive for a living…

It’s not easy to do courier work part time and here is some advice to help you make a decision.

Things you will need:
1. A van - forget your car. Courier companies simply won’t trust you and you may lose out on work as a result.

2. Insurance - The policy needs to have “Courier Use” on it, you will not be covered without it. You also need goods in transit insurance (GIT) to cover the cost of the goods if they get damaged in your possession. Public Liability is also a good idea

3. Sat Nav - These save you fuel, make driving safer (compared to map reading) and all round save you money. One of the best investments I ever made for our business.

4. A decent mobile phone, one that you can use to surf the internet on for backloads and get telephone numbers for local courier companies from.

5. Some courier companies to work with - you are unlikely to be able to service your own customers working just part time, so the next best option is to subcontract for other companies.

If you want to know more about setting up your own courier business, the ‘the Complete Courier Guide‘ is available at The Courier Shop.

Just wondering: Are courier companies contracting out at the moment or are they keeping all work ‘in-house’ wherever possible?

    Hi Linda
The freight exchanges are quiet at the moment, so that says to me many companies are keeping their work in house.
